I've questioned our President's ethics before, but I believe I have been correct in that assessment. Last night he hit a new low, even for him. On the Jay Leno show he likened his bowling game to that of someone in the "Special Olympics". Really Mr. President? I didn't realize you were born with an extra/altered chromosome? Or did you sustain an injury during birth or as a child that has caused every day things to be more difficult for you? Or maybe you just think it's "funny" to make fun of those that have to work diligently to master basic tasks?
In any case, I was NOT amused and I let him know it. I sent the following email message to him today:
"Mr. President,
My husband and I have gone to great lengths to have people accept our children and to GET our children. Three of our six children are adopted, two internationally, and they have a little something "extra", an extra 21st chromosome, or Down Syndrome. Your comment on Jay Leno about "Special Olympics" has sent our country back 10 years in the acceptance of our special children. Imagine my hurt when I heard the President of the United States mocking those in our country who often can't defend themselves, at least not eloquently. It could be likened to the mocking slaves used to get not that long ago. Doesn't seem so funny any more, does it Mr. President?"
I doubt he will read it, or the thousands of others I'm sure he has/will receive, but it made me feel better voicing my feelings. After all, isn't that the right of every American? I usually don't get involved with politics on my blog, but this one was quite personal, so I felt I had to comment. I may never mention politics again on here, but that isn't a given either.
I still am proud to be an American, I love my country and all those that risk their lives to provide us with the freedoms we so enjoy. And as the Commander and Chief of the US, I will give him the respect he is entitled to with the title he has been given. However, I don't have to like his ethics, and I don't. I'm done now, whew, I feel better ;o) .
Blessings to all...

I voted for him and I am SO SO SO put off by his comment. I have lost a ton of respect for him. I don't even have kids, but I work with some AMAZING kids with special needs. I love RR and I want to adopt from there one day. I'm just apalled by his comment
oh, and btw, one of the top bowlers in the special olympics has bowled 5 perfect games. Obama would be LUCKY to bowl as well as some of the special olympics bowlers
Good for you!! I'm SO glad you chose to voice your opinion because although I did not see the show I'm really sad no angry to hear he would say something like that!! How rude and awful he was!
I agree 100%. I was absolutely appalled by the comment. I did not see it when it aired, but saw it this morning. It truly makes me sick that he would say something so hurtful. I love your letter. It is quick, to the point and truthful. Honestly though it doesn't surprise me- he is also for killing innocent babies by method of abortion *sigh*
Christy
I heard about this and on each online article I hear comments like "It was an innocent comment that hurt no one," and you know what, even if it hurt no one else, it hurt ME. I'm so tired of everyone being MEAN...why can't people JUST BE NICE!
And I also heard someone respond to Gov. Palin's response, saying "Our most precious and unique people are all children but esp the ones who are on honor rolls/have grade point averages of 4.0 and above. [Intellectually challenged children] are in no way special and unique!"
I wonder if that person has ever met a child with Ds or other "disability", because he certainly would not be saying that if he did know any! I just don't understand people!
Guess what? I am not smart, I was held back last year. Guess what? I am still fearfully and wonderfully made. Children with Ds are amazing kids who have great qualities that the rest of us can only pray for. Yes, I am saying they are SPECIAL, PRECIOUS children. All children are precious and special, but there is nothing wrong with pointing out the beautiful things about "special needs" children.
Sure, the president seems remorseful, and we all make mistakes. But why don't you prove your remorse, Mr Obama and take Kolan McConiughy up on his challenge? Five scores of 300 since 2005, and, yes, he is a Special Olympics athlete! Don't just tell the heads of S.O. you're sorry, TELL THE ATHLETES. Pull out a video camera and admit to them that you made a mistake. I'm sure they will forgive you, but until you address them, it will be quite hard for me to let that comment slide.
Ah, sorry for the rant... like I said before, "it hurts!"
